Fushima Shrine in Kyoto is the most famous of the 30,000 Shinto shrines dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice and sake, to be found in Japan. It is well known for the 10,000 torii gates, mostly painted in vivid vermilion, which cover the paths that wind through a wooded hillside. It can take up to 2 hours to walk the full circuit but refreshments are available and it is well worth the effort, especially at sunset on a sunny day.
